Doty Elementary School became
Doty Multi ervice Center in 1990,
after Director Lewis A. Colson, a
retired poticemaa initiated an "incu­
bator" program model he'd seen ork
in Florida.
"The Doty effort is a special
empbasis on youth, "he aid. "Con­
vincing young men in our commu­
nity of their importance, to them-
elves and their familirs is the focus
of the Center.

Musi�ians are in the building too,"
Colson noted.
ELEVEN SERVICE providers

Robert L. Brown, Jr., Founder of
Free America, a youth anti-drug
organization is Doty's Deputy Di­
rector and stressed that today's youth
need understanding.
"WE CONDucr open forums
and rap sessions to explore inner
feelings so that youngsters and their
parents can build relationships that
make strong African-American com­
munities, "Brown aid. "We want to
.. bat�h' those �hildren that will be
strong role models to be able to control
various environmental situations they
come up against."
Employment is one of the big­
gest �ballenges for Urban musemlds.
Media communications and art-re­
lated professions arc good paying
vocations if kids are taught how to
access cWIiculums that provide proper
training, Brown said.
"Getting today's youth to under­
stand that they are responsible for
themselves is the charge 'we've un­
dertaken at Doty. They can no longer
see themselves as victims if they are
going to survive in the mainstream
or within their own neighborhood. "
