DBTRO m 2)-On Septe ber 17, 1991,
On Church, One Child of Michig n, Inc. will present
the program, "Facing the inevitable - The growing
need for more fo t r nd doptive homes for African­
Amercan children." Th program will be held at
Friendship Baptist Church located at 3900 Beaubien
in Detroit from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
"We hope to focus attention to the pre ing need
for fo ter and adoptive hom for African-American
children and provide answers to prospective foster
aoo adoptive parents," said Yvonne Golden, the ex­
ecutive director of the program. A panel of leading
experts will present issu and practical solutions on
the ubj t. Topics will include: Who are the
children?"; "Community response"; Dispelling the
myths"; and "Ecumenical response."
Father George H. Clements, Blac Chicago-
b ed Catholic pri t and founder of the On Church,
On Child Program in Chicago, will be th keynote
peaker, Fr. Clem nts w th ubject of a recent
television movie, "Th Father Clemen Story" tar­
ring Lou Go ett, Jr. which chronicled hi efforts to
becom an doptive p rent.
One Church, One Child of Michigan, Inc. i a
minority recruitment program e tabli hed in 1986, in
collaboration with the State of Michigan, to find
fo ter and adoptive home for African-American
children throughout the tate of Michigan.

has been competing in rhythmic
gymnastic for the past four years.
Before that,sh spent 3 years in ar­
tistic gymnastics. She has competed
in Montreal, Canada, New York, D­
linois, Indiana, Ohio, Wiscon in,
Missouri, Flordia, Colorado and
Michigan.
Chanda, age 16, will be a senior
this fall Mercy High School.
De pite 20 hours of practice per
week she has maintained a B
average. She plans to attend
Spellman College after graduation
and major in engineering.
She live with her mother, Sharon'
and father, Thomas, who is a g neral
contractor; an older brother, Chad,
who attend Morehouse College; and
a 10 year old brother, Kareern, who
attends Faith Christian Academy.

Adoption and the Family Tree
presents" a conference for adoptive
and prospective adoptive families, "
Saturday, September 28 in
Rochester, Michigan, executive
director Janis J. Seikaly said. She and
her husband, William R., founded
the support group which has a mem-
bership of 100. .
Seikaly said presently "Private
or independent adoption is not law­
ful in Micbigan." However, she
added, "It is legal in most other
states." .
The focus of the conference will
be "how a Michigan resident may
legally adopt through private adop­
tion."
According to Seikaly, State Rep­
resentative David Gubow, chair of
the House Adoption Subcommittee,
"will speak about Michigan adoption
i ues today and in the future."

neys will speak, including Attorneys

career. All the hard work, muscle
trains, back aches, and practice
have finally paid off.
"The Private Adoption Handbook,"

"almost impossible" fora "white per­
son" to adopt an infant through agen­
cies licensed by the state and
interracial adoption is seldom, at
best.
She added, "All the agencies in
ichigan are licensed by the tate."
When an individual adopts
privately, it is not the same as when
one adopts through a state licensed
agency, Seikaly said.
In private adoption, the in­
dividual interacts with the "birth
mother" or someone, an anorn y or
a doctor, who represents·her .

However, she added, "It is not
legal for money to change hands in
any state for the purpose of en­
couraging her (the birth mother) to
relinquish her child to you."

living expenses but in Michigan you
can't offer either."
