HIGHLAND PARK
IN THE Black community,
• we can tart by strengthening
our families .. The movie
character, "Tre," has parent,
although eparated, who do all
they can to keep him traight.
Not every family has such a

influence, but caring neighbor

Black men can put more of our
children on the right track.
owi ng up in the
segregated South, children had
compassionate Black adult
beyond our families who told
us that we were valued and
important. More -church
mentoring programs, Big
Sister and Big Brother
programs can do sg today.
They mean the difference
between success and failure
for a child. So take the time to
help one child.
: The odds against personal
or professional success are
tacked mightily against
thousands of black children
whose minds and talents our
country desperately needs. We
cannot afford to lose any chi ld .
who may have the potential to
become the next Colin Powell
or Thurgood Marshall or John
Singleton.
"Boyz N The Hood" is a
powerful portra yal of the
und ared war at home that is
troying and wasting our
young. Parents should take
their teenagers to this movie
and discuss its messages -
that drugs, crime and violence
lead to nowhere.
"Boyz N The Hood" is one
more testament for them. We
cannot wai t for the Black
community and nation to .
recognize that Black children
and familie face the worst
crisis since Slavery.

• Congestive Heart Failure Treatment
According to recent tatistics published in the American Heart JOUT
nal, more than 2 million Americans have congestive heart failure. Almost
a million Americans are hospitalized each year as a result of this condition.
Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart can no longer pump the
proper amount of blood needed by the body. With heart failure comes a
build up of fluid in the lung, legs, and in other parts of the body.
There are several cause of bean failure including high blood pressure,
previous heart attacks, blockage of the vessels of the heart that supply
oxygen to me blood, infection or damage to heart valves, and birth-related
defects of the heart. Ri factors related to th causes include smoking,
obesity, and a high blood chole teroll vel.
The treatment and/or prevention of heart failure hould be directed to
the causes when causes are known. For example, if there i blockage of the
heart vessels, surgical correction of the blockage will lessen problems
associated with heart failure. Lifestyle modification, uch as weight 10
and smoking cessation is recommended for everyone with history of
heart disease. Specific iherapie for heart failure inc Iud diuretics to help
reduce water retention, digitali -type medicines to strengthen the heart
beat, and vasodilator medicines to open blood vessels and allow blood to
flow more freely.
