A performance at the' Gospel Music Workshop when he was just 16, won him his first record contract. He's had three since, yielding two hit al­ bums and a Stellar Award. His latest album topped the charts andis currently number three. "The Lord has just opened up a lot of doors," says Moore. There was at first some confusion about just who had released his most recent album, entitled "James Moore-Live With. The Mississippi Mass Choir". Said Moore, "a lot of people think it was Mississippi Mass' album, but it was Rev. James Moore album, and the Mississippi Mass Choir backed me up. Because I did two song on th Missi sippi Mass Choir' fir t album, and it was great. So, they backed me on my last album." And when the Stellar award-winning gospel vocalist belts out his wholly­ acclaimed rendition of "God Will Take Care Of You", believe him, -he knows! Reared in a foster home, this Detroit native has had more than hi share of troubles. "I know last year to the top in 1990, I was going through 0 much -personal things," Moo ate. "But God brought 'me through it." The hard times Moore's referring to include a broken engage­ ment, threats and rumors. " hurt, because I was talked about real bad and called all kind of thing," Moore contend. .. Indeed, success in gospel has not come easy. At one point, it had near­ ly cost him his self-esteem, surpris­ ingly enough with his own record company -Malaco Records, A di couraged Moore adds, "anytime you get one of the owners of the ord company talk to you any type of way -disrespect you and the God within you, and they indict you on this or tha t, it becomes a nightmare." Pre ently con idering a label change, Moore feels that 'he's not gotten the respect nor support an an­ ist, needs. "At one point, I really felt like giving up.
