with bills, she'd share it with us. Or
if me and my brother were acting up
in school and not taking care of our
responsibilities in the house, like
chores, we'd have an hour's discus
sion about it. I was taught to com

Latifa's still surrounded by fami
lyand friends. They constantly drop
ln, Lawyers call every five minutes.
Life is channeled chaos. She's either
performing or working on a film or
doing a photo shoot or making a
cameo appearance in another
rapper's video. At the Love Ball in
May, Latifaq was rushed by
television reporters, including
MTV's fashion correspondent,
Cindy Crawford. Transvestite
waiters told her how much they loved
her; and s trangers said hello .
Latifah's anticonformist spirit fit
right in. .

. years old, is the vice presi
dent (and one of five salaried
employees) of Flavor Unit Manage
ment "Any person who can take two
k·ids," Latifah said, "basically

school, because she felt they
deserved a better education, is doing
all right She put us into' a decent

watched 'us graduate from high
school and do ome college and be

Latifah says she values what she

raps, sometimes appear on stage with
her, occasionally travel with her. In
an unfriendly world, they are the
buffer, a reminder that Latifah comes
from a community that supports her.
One member of the community is
Sha-Kim Compere, her manager, an
old friend who helps run Flavor Unit
Management. The management
company which is independent from
. Tommy Boy, is working with 10
bands, including Naughty by Nature,
a rap group from East Orange.
"I like having people around me
who do for me as much as I do for
tbem," Latifah said. "Take a bullet
for me, just like I'd do for them if it .
came down for it We had this crew,
we all rapped, we all had big dreams,
we all wanted to make records, and
succeed. We stayed friends even
when my stuff took off: What 21-
year-Old thinks she can do it all on her
own? Not me anyway."
, Given the pressures of run-
ning both a business and a
career, eventually Latifah needs an
emotional payoff. One' is the simple
pleasure of the rap performance. "I
enjoy getting up on stage and aying
things that excite people," Latifah
said. "I get the same thrill every time
I perform well."
Another i her new home, which
she will share with her mother and
brother. "You know how children
are, wanting to live away from
home," Mrs. Owens said. "Now she
says, 'I need a base. I need to come
home,'" In this house Latifah will be
known not as Queen Latifah but as'
Dana Owens. "I am the queen in my
house," her mother said. "She has
not overthrown me yet."
