DETROIT-New Bethel Baptist
CbUl'Ch was organized in March 0
1932.
The organization took place in
the bome of Samuel and Mamie
Vamadone, who were residing at
2627 Leland Street
The founders, whose president
was Mary Walker, were known as
the "Helping Hand Society." The
ministers in charge were Reverend
'H. W. Webb and Reverend
C.C.Cumming. The elected of­
ficers were W.B. Bell, chairman of
the Deacon Board and F J. Brown,
church clerk.
Reverend Robert Tate super­
vised and administered the er­
vices.
The Reverend H.B. Bronson
conducted the first Sunday service.
His sermon was: "The word of God
increased. "

The five churches "came into
existence" during New Bethel's
"first 13 years of existence."
New Bethel bas had mortg ge
burning at two locations. In 19 9
New Bethel burned the mortgag to
its "$200,000, 2,500 seat capacity"
building at 4210 Hastings Street. In
1979 the indebtedness, "$500,000
was liquidated" but, because of the
tragic assault on Reverend
Franklin, which left him comatose
WltiJ his death, the mortgage was
not burned on the church's present
loca tion, 8430 C.L.Frankl in
Boulevard, unti11981.
Coleman nd his sermon was:
" And He called it Bethel. "
NEW BETHEL'S LINE of
pastors, beginning in 1932, are:
Reverend V.L. Bolton who pas­
tored "a {ew months;" Reverend
H.R. Coleman who became pastor
in 1932 and served for two years; in
1935 Reverend N.A. Armstrong
became the pastor. He served for
five years. On October 25, 1940,
Reverend William E. Ramsey be­
came the pastor. He erved for five
years. In 1946, the Reverend
Clarence La Vaughn Franklin be­
came the pastor and remained pas­
tor until his death in 1984.
Reverend Robert Smith Junior,
New Bethel's current pastor.be­
came pastor in 1985.
New Bethel's 59 year history
has been colorful and interesting.
One of the interesting things about
the church is: five of Detroit area
churches owe their existence to
New Bethel.

3,000 and its membership is ap­
proximately 1,450.
"Presently," New Bethel says,
"we are again a city on a hill that
Marilyn McCoo turns
her energies to Gospel

The response most people
have to Marilyn McCoo singing
gospel is surprise. "I have been a
se�lar artist for so many years,
and still am," says McCoo.
"I'm not changing all of a sud­
den now." (Particularly not in the
midst of the grand reunion' that
has her doing a much ballyhooed
national tour with her o)d group
- the Fifth Dimension). "I guess
alot of people weren't aware that
I was a Chrisitian. Or if they
were, I guess they consider this a
bold step."
But for McCoo, it is hardly a
bold step, nor.has she ever hidden
the fact. "I've been 0 CBN, the
Trinity Broadcast Netw rk, and I
did the Jim 4 Tammy kker's
show." Nonetheless, s is quite
excited with her new alb , "The
Me Nobody. Knows," a d take
ingular pleasure in si' ging for
the Lord.
The music she hopes provides
some encouragement fo,!
believers through these difficult
times. She also wants to let them
know that God can be a source of
their strength. This, she know,
first-hand, as he helped her
through the pain of her mother'
passing two years ago.

Today, McCoo is looking for­
ward to being viewed as gospel
artist, though she's not at all
pleased with the categories that
are placed on Christian/Gospel
music today. Many have already
labeled her into the Contem­
porary Christian mold. And
while McCoo admits tha her
taste in mo t musical forms tends
to be contemporary, he resents
the division and separation.
,"I don't think that there's a
place for that kind of thing in thi
music. I want my music played
on all stations, including gospel.
I think there's something for
everybody on this album."
