SAM SAID he really didn't
know where to begin; that so
much wa happening that it
taxing his patience to
remain civil.
I waited wondering why
Sam, of all people, who e
mouth run like" a clatter
bone of a goo e's behind." was
finding i difficult to put hi
thoughts into word .
Just a I decided to
verbalize my thoughts. Sam
poke.
"Wrote!" he said. "I had this
, God awful nightmare last
night. I dreamt the turbulence
of the 1960 resurrected itself
and instead of pacific
resistance, the treet were
filled with people who e
respect for individual rights
were absolutely zilch.
"When I awoke I was in a
cold sweat. My body shook
like that Saint Vidas Dance
and secreted in the depths of
my mind were the rumbling of
disgu t because of all that I
thought, felt, knew and
visualized to be true. I realized
the pedestal, the elevat
po ition the white man has
placed the white woman in,
wu a catastrophe well neigh
ready to explode."
"The ense of justice that
I've acquired somewhere along
the way, Wrote, demands that I
decry both acts of violence
that came out of the Freedom
Festival's' Hart Plaza incident.
"I betieve suppression; the
very fact that Black women in
America are stereotyped, in
the final analysis, will prove to
be the reason the violence we
witnessed through the whi te
media sensationalizing the
event, happened.
I deplore both. The act of
violence and the .
sensationalism. Each was as
appalling as the other. But I
wa not surprised because ever
. ince the Reagan
dministration gained access
the White House, violence
InCl erosion of civil and human
'rights have been the order of
the day.
"Police brutality didn't
begin with the Rodney King
incident; it has been around
since day one. But before I
forget my train of thought,
let's get back to the business at
hand;that pedestal.
"I WAS THINKING about
something I read the other day;
cmetning the kids might say,
'Blew my hair back.' But as I
thought.about it, I began to
understand the true meaning of
wbat is meant by "by product."
"Wrote! what I read was:
during the entire history of
thi country, there has not been
one white man executed for
raping a Black woman. But
during th t arne time frame,
almost 600 Black men have
been executed for raping white
