of a Nationai African American
mu eum. The recommendation
is based on a one-year African
American Institutional Study

According to the 120-page
report, the new museum should
be located in the Smithsonian's
Arts and Indu tries 'Building in
Wubington, D.C. an'd hould be
governed by a board of trustee
appointed by the Smith onian
Board of Regents. It was also
suggested tbat 10 of these 19
trustees be individual of
African descent.
While the exhibitions and re­
search of the proposed museum,
would be broad and inclusive,
collections would initially con­
centrate on the areas of art and
material culture, 20th-century
objects of U.S. �ivil right and
labor movement , Black media
figures, and the work of Black,
artists.

(NBCSL) has launched a series of
working regional conferences to
develop strategies for redistricting
and reapportionment in Black com­
munities throughout the country.
"Redistricting and reapportion­
ment are two of the most important
issues facing the Black community
during the decade of the 1990's.
We have to be prepared to deal
with opposition forces it) aggressive­
ly working toward tbc-climination of
racialty 'di criminatory pol,iti�al
boundaries, which- J\ave re trictea
the, participation of Blacks and other
minority groups in the American
political proces ."
NBCSL has joined with the Voter
Education Section of NAACP and
the Electoral Participation Project,
headed by Antonio Harrison, in hold­
ing the serious of conferences. The
first conference was held in Chicago
on May 24, 1991. Other conferences
are scheduled for Portland, Oregon,
on June 8; in Bo ton, on August 2,
and in La Veg ,during NBCSL's
annual national conference Decem­
ber 2-6.
