Vincent C. Stuart will retire from
Ford Motor Company's Main Power
Plant June 28. OD September 11,
1990, Stuart celebrated his Golden
Anniversay with Ford Motor Com
pany as an electrical engineer. "Tbe
electrical trade has allowed me to
instruct and influence many young
people in getting and maintaining
employment. The initial electrical
training I received at Cass Technical
High School began a lifetime of
benefit and achievement. By apply
ing myself to what electrical en
gineering had to offer, I have
received opportunities galore."
Stuart .now in his seventie ,
recounts episodes from his
childhood and adult life that made'
him a doer and kept him in good
mental and physical stamina.
Of Jamaican descent, his paren
were born in St. Elizabeth and
Manchester Parish. His mother told
him about how she and his father ran
away from the island, migrated to
Philadelphia and married, then set
tled in Detroit several years prior to
his birth.
"My family was big on Gar
veyism and worked to cquire ships
for Garvey's commerce venture. He
intended to set up a U.S. trade route
with Africa and the Caribbean.
Leisure travel to the Motherland w
in the plan too," Stuart remarked.
"ONCE IN DETROIT, my papa
took employment with Ford MotolS
where he retired. That t m heart
to follow his example, tit to do
as well be had. Though he and my
mother never pennanently returned
to Jamaica they had hoped, they
consi tently nutured the extended
family there with all sorts of supPort,
including financial." Stuart con
tinued that tandard by pOnsoring
three Jamaican family memben in
U.S. schools.
"The seed for learning was
planted largely by my mother who
was determined that I succeed. So
much so that during the dep ion
he cut the heels off • pair of ber

their endeavors. Despite the serious
demeanor I had a tudent I w an

Boxing and wimming were

Bicycle racing wet Stuart's ap
petite at age 17 when he eyed a
marathon ign in a Dearborn bike
hop window. He laughed about his
first bike, made from pares won in
newspaper sale competitions. "I
earned it and felt proud of its custom
style. Thirty years of bicycling en
thusiasm have afforded new bikes
and many tropies," he continued.
In May be placed second in Belle
Isle's Wolverine 200 Mile Special
Bike Marathon.
Fo four years after high school
Stuart attended Ford Motor
Company' apprentice school study
ing electrical engineering. ,
Wben World War Il hit, his safety
net of parental deferment became
draft duty in the United State Navy
due to his ins tence on serving in the •
. military. Luckily the enlistment
lasted only one year. He as among
the filSt Black Navy personnel to be
technicians and taught shop and
theory at the Navy' Service School
in Hampton, Virginia. While in Vir
ginia, he met Cynthia, who later be
came hi bride.
AFTER HONORABLE di -
charge from the Navy, Stulrt
returned to Ford to continue learning
more electrical engineering. He VI
one of Ford's first computer plant
engineers. "We could take whatever
we wanted so that time it w air
conditioning, heating and refrigera
tion. I went to school to be a good
foreman."
Besides the Ford Motor Company
program, Stuart attended Lawrence
Tech and Henry Ford Community
College. In 1990 he learned lock
smith technology. "I have enough
knowledge now to teach practical
technologies when I get to Jamai "
he said.
The National Technical Associ -
tion (NTA) w e tablisbed in 1926
and is chartered in 40 states with 30
student chapters. NTA recognizes
persons who have attained proflcien
cy in engineering, architecture,
mathematics and natural sciences.
Stuart ucceeded C. 1... Henderson 81
trea urer of the Detroit Chapter.
(HendellOn engineered the Aaibal-
dor Bride nd the Detroit tunnel.)
In May, Stuart received an
humanitarian award from the Detroit
Chapter. 1be national convention is
stlheduled for Atlanta in September
and Stuart is a candidate for a nation
al achievement award. Two of
Stuart's son are electrical engirI
and are members of NTA.
Always of service to his fellow
man Stuart said "it's good to have
someone behind you, someone who
cares. I have never bad a problem
lending hand wherever needed.
Over the years I have volunteered for
10 of organizations. When my so ...
