Hook apartment was theirs, where
the front doors were and where the
part WIS.
Since this is writer, director and
'producer Matty Rich's first movie, .
there can only be congratulations
. and accOlades out there for him. He
i also a fairly good actor, playing
leuer par:t of Larry, the guy who
always "wolfs· people and gets them
into trouble.
"Straight Out," reminiscent of
parts of Lorraine Han berry's
"Raisin in the Sun," is the tory of a
. father, George T. Odom as Ray
BroWD,·who works hard for his fami
ly, but who cannot seem to make
enougb-and so he gets drunk and
beats his wife, Ann D. Sanders
Frankie Brown, when he is
trated.
• lnwhile, his son, Lawrence
Gilliard Jr. as Dennis Brown thinks
tbat the only ay the family, ,will
prosper is to get "that money" out
there-no matter what he has to do.
So together with two friends,
Mark Malone Kevin, and Larry,
the trio plans and carrie out the theft
of drug dealer.
The end re ul t, of course, i
edy all around. '
It is a poignant story, a simple
story, and it tells volumes to those
who would listen.
THIS MOVIE IS not heavy on
violence, ex and langua&e, as some
would have believe. In fact, it
appeared to me to be pretty light
weight, compared to some I've seen,
and some I know our young people
have seen .
. The one sex scene is over like
tbat-and I_know, without having
seen them. that "New Jack: City" and
"A Rage in Harlem" have far more
graphic sex scene ,and I imagine the
kids behind me saw them both. The
violence is more imaginative than
graphic (nothing at all like Farrah
Fawcett's interpretation of "Ex
tremuies" or "Glory,,), and the lan
guage is not as broad or vicious as
"Die Hard" or "Predator. "
Uneven would be the right word
for most of the movie as it runs from
beginning (finding the family'
problems) to the end. Sometimes the
transition scenes are slow, but they
flow smoothly unlike "The White
