Highland Park enters city
livability awards program
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mayor
G. Scott and the city of Highland
Park have entered the Twelfth
Annual City Livability Awards
Program, co-sponsored by The
United States Conference of
Mayors and Waste Management
of North America, Inc,
City Livability Awards honor
mayors and their city govern
ments that have made sig
nificant progress in enhancing
the "livability" of their com
munities through 'the develop
.ment of outstanding urban
programs. These applications,
which can focus on any program
that contributes to urban quality
of life, range from economic
development to progressive
planning processes to anti-drug
programs.
Highland Park's application
focu es upon the implementa
tion of the city's Strategic Plan
ning Process Action Plan.
The Committee wa com-
po ed of a completely
heterogeneou group of
economic development profes-
ional, public officials, citizen
and re ource per on who met
six times to develop an Action
Plan addre ing three critical is-
ues facing Highland Park.
THE SPECIFIC critical is
sue are (1) jobs and economic
development; (2) commer
cial/retail revitalization, and (3)
housing and neighborhood
revitalization.
The Committee's mi ion i
to improve job, buslne ,hous
ing and shopping opportunitie
in the community and create op
portunitie for future develop
ment.
.. M yor Scott ha been able to
pull together not only a diverse'
group of ci tizens and public of
ficials to make this project a
reality, but she has also gained
the support of the major public
utilities in Michigan, the educa
tional community and the
various political factions to ad
dress the cri tical needs of the
community.
Mayof Scott's program will
be included in the archives of
the Conference of Mayors' Na
tional Clearinghouse on City
Livability as a model for other
cities to follow. Located in
Washington, DC, at the Con
fe renee of Mayors' head
quarters, the clearinghouse
gathers, evaluates, and dissemi
nates information on a variety of
urban innovations.
Five awards will be
presented-one First Place and
four Outstanding Achievement
Awards for citie above 100,000
in population, and one First
Place and four Out tanding
Achievement Awards for cities
below 100,000 in population.
The City Livability Award
winners, decided by an inde
pendent panel of judge , will be
announced on June 17, at the An
nual Conference of Mayors in
San Diego.
