Chickenpox and Shingles:
The Herpes Connection
As the rash of childhood
Chickenpox fades, the viru
move from the skin Into a rest
ing state where i coexi t with
the nerve cells for many years.
The virus particles move down
the nerve and to the skin only in
the un.fortunate few who get
shingles, most of whom are mid
dle-aged or older.
The reactivation of the virus
may be directly connected with
an i nj ury to a nee, stress, 8
minor illness such as the flu, or
serious diseases such a cancer
or AIDS. And sometimes there
is no specific reasn for the out
break of shingles.
A BURNING, STINGING or
prickly sensation often begins
before the shingle rash appears.
After a few days, groups of
small clear blisters appear.
These blisters turn cloudy and
then dry to form a scab. The
rash is u ually limited to one
side of ,he body, beginning near
the spinal column or the side of
the head.
As the rash develops, it
moves to the front of the body to
form a band or semi-circle. The
burniRg ensation. rash. blister ,
sc bs and di tribution of the
rash sugge t shingle to a der
matologist, but if there i any
doubt, scrapings can ,be taken of
the blister to be examined
under a microscope.
Since the virus i present in
kin cells during the ra h,
shingles i contagiou. A person
who ha never had chickenpox
can catch this disea e from
someon: with hingles. Preg
nant women, cancer and AIDS
patients who have never been
exposed to chickenpox hould
be especlally careful.
In typical ca e . of zo ter,
both the ra h and irritation di -
appear without treatment within
a few weeks and never recur.
Cool compre ses help relieve
the irritation

Fir t, let me talk briefly about
wh t h ppen durin cold or
simil r vir I re piratory illne s.
The membrane of the no e and
throat become wollen nd ir
rit ted by the body' reaction to
the infecting viru . Along with
swelling of tis ue, there i in
creased mucu production.
The combination of the well
ing and the exces mucus bring
about the congestion and
drainage we as oclate with a
common cold. Blowing the e
extra ecretton out of the no e
will not help you get over the
cold any quicker, but it can
. make it ea ier to breathe.
Forcefully blowing the no e,
a you de cribed, can actually
make the welling in the nose
wor e. The extra mucus i cer
tainly forced out of the no e, but
the na al ti ue, which i already
swollen, is vigorously vibrated
and irritated by the rapid pa -
sage of air and mucu . Thi ac
tually cases more welling
within a few minute, which
make the nose congestion
return - only worse.
NOW, LET'S get to the e r
connection. The eardrum i
situated at the end of the ear
_canal and totally closes it off .
Sound w ve are directed down
the canat and trike the eardrum
causing it to vibrate. This vibra-
Shingles is one of the most
misunderstood skin diseases.
Many people think that hingles
is caused by "nerves" and they
are partly correct. They are
usually surprised to learn that
the same virus is also respon
sible for chickenpox. And they
are often startled to find out tbat
this virus is herpes. Der
matologists are quick to add that
this herpes virus is different
from the one ttiat causes genital
herpes and cold sore .
The word "shingles" is
derived from the Latin word
meaning girdle. The correct
medical term for shingles is her
pes zoster, or simply zoster,
which comes from the Greek
word for belt. which describes
the band or belt-like pattern of
the zoster rash.
