Hilliard advises H.P. schools
By Carla Hu ton
Staff Writer
Captivating in sound and
mind, Asa G. Hilliard spoke
about "time, space, and
change" at Highland Park
Community High School. Hil
liard mesmerized the audience
while elaborating on what and
why Black History curriculums
need to be taught to African
American children. For many
years, Black children have not
been educated about their his
tory, therefore, they have b
came "disfunctional" said Hil
liard.
The lecturer posed a num
ber of questions pertaining to
the outcome of Black children
in to day's society. Hilliard
also pointed out a variety of
facts which Black and White
America need to address. For
instance, "Over one half of
Bla'ck children go to bed every
night either physically or men
tally hungry in America" said
Hilliard.
Outspoken with messages,
Hilliard believes that "our
children" do not understand
tie, space, an'd change.
WIthout the comprehension of
these three 'necessities, Hil
liard feels "if you do not under
stand, you are going to be dis
functional in this world."
The scholar also questions
why "our children" only func
tion on the stopwatch and not

African-American children do
not have a sense of time nor
space, "they are not able to lo
cate themselves on the'
calender."
THE REASONS given for
lack hildren being imprac
ticable 1D todays's world is the
lack of African-American cur
riculums in the school system.
The Education process does
not have Black kids anchored'
in their operation said Hil

Americans do" not know that
"for the first four millions
years, there was nothing but
Africans on the Earth .. If you
are on this earth, your ancestry
is Africa."
Hilliard firmly believes that
African people played a major
part in leading the world to
civilization. Not only were
Africans the first 'architec
tures, imperialists and mathe-
. maticians, they were also the
first people to lose their land,
freedom, and mind said Hil
liard.
Struggling for a more ac
curate and, better school sys
tem, Hilliard wants Black
, children to feel a wholeness for
their people.
IN ORDER FOR African
American children to have a
thorough understanding of
their heritage, a fully
developed- curriculum has to
,,' be established.The steps
needed to organize a new
African-American curriculum
begins with the desire to edu
cate others.
Resource bases are also es
sential for Black people to ad
vance in time and space so they
can under st an d change said
Hilliard. Furthermore, without
the complete apprehension of
the African race, "our
children" will continue to be
stripped of their rights.
