LA GRANGE, ILL. - Recent cientific research indicate that
differences in vitamin E level may account for variations in the
everity of sickle cell di ease, the life-threatening hereditary
di ease that affects one in 500 African American, and a smaller
number of per ons of Mediterranean ancestry.
Researchers at the Duke Univer ity Comprehensive Sickle
Cell Center, have found a significant correlation between low
levels of vitamin E in the plasma of sickle cell patients and the
clinical everi of their disease. When individuals in the study
. had higher vitamin E levels, they had less severe disease. Those
with lower plasma vitamin E had more frequent painful episodes
and organ impairment. (Organ impairment resulting from sickle
cell di ea e i referred to medically as "end organ dysfunction"
and includes kidney, bone, lung and eye damage, troke, heart
failure, nd impotence.)
The Duke Univer ity re earch team headed by George Phillip
Jr. MD and Christine C. Tangney PhD measured blood levels of
vitamins E and C, and betacarotene in each of the patient .
Then, in each case, the severity of the sickle cell disease (SCD)
was evaluated based upon the number and nature of painful
episodes and end organ dysfunction that occurred during the
prior two year period. Low level of only one of the nutrients
studied, vitamin E, was shown to be related to the painful sickle
cell disease events.
It has long been known that most patients with sickle cell
disease have low plasma level of vitamin E. But the work of
the Duke researchers is the first that links these low levels of
vitamin E with sickle cell disease severity.
SICKLE CELL DISEASE is a disorder that is characterized
by blood vessel obstruction, shortened red blood cell life span,
and anemia. The name "sickle cell" derives from the distorted
shape of the red blood cells of SCD patients: the cells become
rigid and elongated, tending to clump together and adhere to
blood vessel walls.
The exact mechanisms involved in the painful episodes of
sickle cell disease are not yet fully understood - but work on
this perplexing medical problem is continuing. It is known that
in SCD, the red blood cells have membrane abnormalities - and
proper function of the membranes is vital to the cell function. It
has also been shown that vitamin E protects cell membranes.
The deficiency of vitamin E that is observed in sickle cell
patient can be normalized by supplementation .with vitamin E .

ASTHMA & DUST
Allergic reaction are fre-
. quently caused by microscopic
mites found in dust particles.
And if a family has a history of
asthma or other allergies, the
amount of house-dust-mite al
lergen the children are exposed
to may determined whether or
not they develop asthma.
Researchers at the University
of Virginia and in Englanc
studied 67 children from birth tc.
11 years of age. All were at risl
for developing -asthma because
one parent had asthma or ha)
fever.
Of 17 children who by age 11
uffered from active asthma, 16
had been expo ed to high levels
of house-dust-mites as infants .
The risk of developing asthma
wa almo t five times greater in
the e children than for children
not exposed to high level of .
dust mites in their early years. -
Mites are commonly found in
dark, humid place like mattre -
se , blankets and rug. To
red uce child's exposure,
eliminate carpeting in the
bedroom, change heating and
air-conditioning filters often,
cover mattre e and pillows
with dustproof casings and wash
bedding weekly in hot water .

Happy Father's Day
By Margaret Man field
Gospel superstar Andrae Crouch just might have the best.
rea on of all to celebrate thi Father's Day. He can till.
remember when his father prayed for him when their church .
was in need of a piano player. Three
weeks later, Andrae became that
piano player. "lowe everything to
him," Crouch said. "He know when
the annointing is there.
If I'm singing a song and he says
something isn't complete, I know
that it's not finished." But perhaps
more importantly Crouch says, "he's
a man of God and the one man that I
would love to be like." ... With a dad
like gospel geat F.C. Barnes, and a
family full of singers that help to
make up the Jackson Southernaire ,
Redd Budd Choir, and round out F.C.
Barnes & Company, it's no wonder
Luther Barnes has done so well.
For a time, many felt he was performing in the shadow of
his dad, Barnes views his talented father and family more as
a vast pool of musical resources. "I sort of like it, and I .
definitely see it as a positive raher than anything bad," Barnes
says. And for the Williams family (who comprisq the Jackson.
Southernaires, the Williams Brothers, and even a couple of the
members of the top-rated Mississippi Mass Choir), "Father's
Day",also holds special meaning ..
Melvin Williams say their late father had been the back
bone of the family. It was due to their father that the family
became so involved in gospel. Says Melvin, "he started us out
as children in church, taught us the basic and pretty much
organized the giOuP." ·

Pre byterian Church Moyes To Dump It's Own Report on
sexuality: More than 600 commissioner at the 203rd Assemb
ly of the Presbyterian Church were expected to exhort tremen
dous pressure in Baltimore to scrap the 200-page majority'
report on sexuality that has been three years in the making.
Why? Well, it seems out of the report has come a revolu
tionary proposal to the recommended blessing of "responsible,
joyful, and caring" intercourse outside of marriage for
teenagers and homosexuals ". So riled up are orne that they
are demanding the committee that had undertaken the tudy be
disbanded for disturbing the race, unity, and purity of the
church.
Just Briefly: Marilyn McCoo has just relea ed her first
gospel album, entitled "The Me Nobody Knows". "What we're
hoping to accomplish through thi album," he says, "is to tal k
about being a Chri tian living in the world, with all its chal
lenge ,with all its struggles, but also with the knowledge that
the Lord is thereto strengthen us. I feel we can offer entertain
ing music with uplifting lyric ."
Marilyn will sing orne of the ongs, a part of a 75-city
