John Field Reichardt, director
of the Michigan Intern tional
Office, said th t the new pro­

black-controlled commercial
bank, recently announced that
they had successfully raised the
S5.6 million in capital. The
money i S600,000 more .than
was needed to open the new
financial institution.
The capital was generated by
an unprecedented effort on tbe
part of the city's religious, busi­
nes and financial communities.
Commitments and actual invest­
ments totaling S3 million, along
with S2.6 million from in­
dividuals and churches made up
part of the funds, according to
Emma Chappell, the bank's'
chairman and CEO.

vide a useful ervice in advanc­

individual countries. And others
feel there is a particular ad­
vantage to maintaining an actual
state presence abroad.

and for all of Philadelphia,"
Chappell said. "In raising funds
to open United Bank, we have
made economic history in our
c i ty. In addi tion, we have
demonstrated .. !lh.t we re
capable of accomptishing great
things if we work together .... We
are anxious to begin playing a
key role in the economic
revitalization of our com­
munity."
The bank, which is expected
to open at .a center-city location
in September of this year, will be
the first black-controlled com- .
mercial bank in Philadelphia
since 1956, and tbe only black­
controlled bank in the Common­
wealth of Pennsylvania.
