Top Opera Divas
are big hit in Gospel
By Maraaret M eld
Ust month, market the release of Spirituals In Concert, the
first-ever' joint concert by America's leading spon ors Kath
leen Battle and Jessye Norman.
·Spirituals In Concert" was
originally broadcast as a 90 minute.TV
specla! late last XJ r as rt Q S- i
TV's " rcat Performances". aped
live at Carnegie Hall in March, of
1990, the project wa the brainchild of
TV producer Peter Oelb.
Gelb had worked both with Norman
and Battle in other venues, and knew
'very well of their love of spirituals. "I
loved the idea," leading operatic star,
Kathleen Battle says. "I wasn't
weened on opera. I ang religious Jes ye Norman
songs, spirituals, and hymn. These are the ongs of my
ancestors, songs of my childhood."
And while BatU grandfather had been a slave,-another
connection to religious music came through her father who
sang in gospel quartets, in and around her hometown of
Portsmouth, Ohio. Battle is presently contracted with
Polygram to put together an album of spirituals.
IRONICALLY, Battles make a profound distinction be
tween spirituals and today' gospel music. "I love to listen to
gospel, but I'm not so sure of where it's going. I'd love to do
"Preciou Lord" with a simple delivery. It's been done a
number of time, a number of ways, but jhar's the great thing
about spirituals, they're sturdy. They can take alot, and tbat
is the hallmark of wonderful, good music."
Not surprlstngty, the most difficult part of putting
"Spirituals In Concert" together, was determining which
spirituals to sing. "I was very adamant about not being
typecast", Battle tate. "I have a light, high voice, and I
didn't want to only use the part of my voice. The spiritual is
so rich and varied, that I wanted my presentation to also be
represented in a varied context. Jessye too, gave a verttable
kaleidoscope of color in the tune that she chose.
The experience brought out sides in both of us that people
would not have predicted. That' what made the it 0 interest
ing. Then of course, the energy in the hall that night was
absolutely uplifting and transported us all. There was some
thing very special going on." Apparently, a great many agree,
, as the album i enjoying phenomenal re-sponse from gospel
stations through-out the country.
The collaboration includes such popular favorites as "He's
Got The Whole World In His Hand" and "Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot" .
Just Bri'fly: Christian rappers got together last month in
Na hville during GMA (Gospel u ic Association) week.
Barry O. Hogan of P.LD. spoke out against gos ip among
them, aying "we shouldn't go around talking bad about each
other. There's no room for a Vanilla Ice in the body of
Christ-he's fake." The group also discussed the po sibility
of reuniting to do a video project dedicated to the late D-Boy,
a Christian rapper who was shot and killed last year ....
This week's scripture: "Therefore judge nothing before the
appointed time; wait til the Lord comes. He will bring to light
what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of
men's hearts. At that time, each will receive his praise from
Ood", -1 Corinthians 4:5.
