Yes, the bus fare increase
.hits again! Christopher Wal
ton, Acting Director for The
Department of Transportation
and members of the Detroit
City Council met last Wednes
day for a budget hearing
regarding the raising of bus
fare. Walton explained
that 70% of the increase would
be paid by the Board of Educa
tion and the other 30% would
affect senior citizens, everyday
bus riders and students who
arc ineligible to ride the bus
. for free.'
The 70% which is going to
be paid by the Board of Educa
tion only covers those students
who are under the Pilot Pass
Program. The Pilot Pass
Program enables eligible stu
dents to ride the bus free.
The only way to extend the
program to ineligible students
would be "to reduce the budget
revenue" or to find another
means of revenue which may be
very difficult.
THE ESTIMATED COST of
increase would be between 15
to 25 cents more. The Depart
ment of Transportation is ex
pected to lose riders due to the
increase said Walton.
The primary reason for the
increase in bus fare is due to
the deterioration of the under
structure of buses. Older
buses were expected to last t
least 12 years but now the
D.O.T. wants to have new
buses every five to six years.
Walton said "we are taking
steps to improve" the bus ys
tem. The D.O.T. i expected to
receive funds 'from 'the Federal
Government in order to have
. the new bu e running by the
beginning of the 1992 year.
Walton and city officials are
not exactly sure when the in
