Black' Women: mpowering
themselves for the future
by Carolyn Warfield
Corrnqond,nI
·Our purpose is to provide
Black women with leadership
pot ntial \yhether in corporate
America -or managing a family,"
Ow n Win, ton told me. "Hlpe
that Black women bear ubstan
til' re ponsibility for the Black
community is absurd. Taxes and
the national budget are r pon-
ible for income decline and the
Black family·s standard of
livtng.
-Who is going to empower us
but our elves," said Gloria
Perkins, founding President of
the African-American Women
for Ed uca tional Empowerment
Foundation. "I'm looking for
ward to helping my si ters stop
dreaming and tart acting."
Perkins concl uded. "That i
wby WOMANSPIRIT decided
to bring women together a& a
collective," Willa Ray and Gwen
Eco agreed.
WOMANSPIRIT, an affiliate
of African-American Women for
Educ tional Empowerment
presented a workshop "Power:
Planning Makes Sense" at the
First Unitarian Univer ali t
Church, April 20, 1991."'
Spiritual growth will bring
about an awareness of all
things," sa,id Betty Appleby.
"Plus how to effect right action
from a global perspective. Ra
tional tbinking has been used to
it detriment. Just look at the
world, our families, the environ
ment," she continued.
APPLEBY, a metaphysical
'tc.acher believe that women's
work has just begun. She thinks
that Black women must strive
for mutua li ty B d learn to
operate from the creative side of
the msel ves. Intui tion is the
creative tool she sees for plan
ning the future. "When intui
tion i integrated into whole
brain usage, the mind becomes
synchronized and accelerated," .
she stated.
Appleby's background is in
human development. In 1980
Ihe founded New Dawn; a
women's adership program.
"The idea ort of sprung from
working with Erma Henderson's
Council of Concerns," she said.
"In finding our level of
mutuality, we must have a ense
of each other. That means shar
ing vulnerabilitie. Once we
recognize the pirit within, we
can begin to center ourselves
and focus on a particular ac
tion. "
Jane Smith, Ed.D discussed
how women must learn to·
manage themselves first to be of
benefit to others.
Knowing what you want is a
good place to start. Can you
truthfully access a Huation and
decide what need to be done.
Then lead your efforts to sue
ces ful completion, he que -
tioned. "If interested in
personal effectivene sand self
management, one needs to
clarify what is of value to them,"
Smith stated. "Goal setting, the
potential to achieve and perfor
mance are Itages of planning.
Keeping cool in the face of pre -
ure i the final trategy," she
concluded.
Smith, a newcomer to Detroit
is a managing director at IN
ROADS, a career development
organization. Thirty- even, of
fices serve the nation in prepar
ing minority, ethnic
college-bound tudents in busi
nes and engineering manage
ment careers. Dr. Smith, ia a
motivational consultant, with
experience on community and
