M.alcolm X Center vows Dexter

by CARLA USTON
Staff Writer
Kwame Kenyatta and mem
bers of the Malcolm X Com
munity Center continue to
launch campaigns to change
Dexter Blvd. to Malcolm X
Blvd.
The campaign has been
going on for the past five years
and will continue to proceed
until Mayor Coleman Young
and other city officials are able
to grant the Black community
their wishes, a cc'or d in g to
Kenyatta.
The proposal has been sub
mitted by supporting
petitioners who patiently wait
for a reply from the Detroit
City Council.
Jenny Oualle, a member of
the Community Economic and
Development Committee says
"we have not had a response
from Fred Martin" who is in
charge of granting the renam
ing of Dexter Blvd.
E YATTA, DI CTOR of
the Malcolm X Community
Center for Black Survival feels
the renamjng of Dexter Blvd.
to Malcolm X Blvd. will have a
positive impact' on Black
youths and "reflect ethnic and
cultural background in the'
neighborhood."
"The city is purpo ely ignor
ing our request because they
have no real commitment and
no African- eccentric per pee
tive to the Black people,"
Kenyatt a said. .
He said, if no response IS
heard from the mayor's ffice
by the end of the week, "we will
arrange a public hearing and
officially on May 19, we are
going to rename Dexter Blvd.
to Malcolm X with or without
the mayor's consent.
It is our belief that the life of
. Malcolm X exemplifies the life
of the masses of our people.
We have him to show tour
youth in the treets, t h t
they can make a positive
