hoImone affects most body cells. and deficiency results in several
problems inc uding fatigue. inIolelance to cold. dry skin. puffme of the
hands and face. and constipation. Persons who have hypothyroidism may
be overweight and prone to recurrent infections.
, According to a recent issue of PluJrnvlcy Times. between six and eight
million Americans uffer from hypothyroidism. Women are five times
more likely to de elophypothyroidism than are men. About 10 percent of
women over the age .of 40 have tI)e condition.
Thyroid gland function can be detennined with blood tests that meas
ure the body's two main thyroid bormones. When' hypothyroidism is
diagnosed. a honnone supplement may be prescribed. These supplements
are prepared synthetically or are derived from animal sources (from beef
and pork thyroid glands). While supplements provide control for the con-
