Downtown Campus.
The night's topic was "The
Politics of Black Women's
Health." Avery, a member of
the national board of directors
for the National Black
Women's Health Project
(NBWHP), said a 1970 survey
which reported that half of the
Black women aged 18-25 inter

prompted the establishment of

Avery says Black women are
participating in a conspiracy of
silence concerning health is

SHE SAYS BLACK women
tend to internalize their
problems, because of their
feelings that society did not
think they were "good enough."
"Sisters have to deal with
what's on top," said Avery,
saying Black women have to
get rid of emotional baggage by
sitting down and talking to one
another.
She said Black women need
Black men to be their allies.
"When you speak with other
men, speak on our part," said
Avery.
She said Black women are
participating in sexism in rais

Black male students per
form better academically than
any other group in their age
category before entering the
fourth grade but there is a con
tinuous decline in perfor-
. mance through the latter
grades.
During the National Com-
mittee for School De
segregation's (NCSD) Twelfth
Annual Conference, "The Fu
ture is N ow: Achievement
Through Diversity and Equi
ty," at the Detroit Westin
Hotel, April 25-28, Dr. Jawan
za Kunjufu, president of
African American Images and
keynot-e speaker asked 'the
audience of about 200 people
why is there a decline in Black
male student' performance
after the third grade.
Their response was lower
teacher expectations, changing
teaching tyles, and a lack of
Black male role model .
As a result, Black males are
disproportionately repre
sented in speci I education
programs, according to Kun
jufu .
HE SAID THE term "at risk"
always means Black people
and that instead of looking at
the victim, the focus needs to
be on the institutions.
He pointed out that 76 per
cent of the country's dr ug

He then went on to ay
Blacks don't have a drug
problem but a moral, dis

problem.
He- cited a need for new
types of teaching, taking
children to 'prisons, morgues,
clinics for drug abusers, to
show them the effects of crime
