MARIAN ANDERSON - During her 40-year career, Marian
Anderson' extraordinary contralto voice and personal
character transformed her from concert singer to symbol to
national treasure. Marian Anderson, a one-hour documentary
premiering Wedne day, May 8 at 9 p.m. (ET; check local listings)
on PBS, offers an inspiring portrait of one of the great contralto
voices of our century. ' The program features interviews with
Miss Anderson (sho n here in a 19308 portrait), as well as
violinist Isaac Stern and opera star Jessye Norman, among
others.

and drugs. He said there are
no drug dealers on pensions
and children have to be shown
that dealers are losers.
Kunjufu said that school his
tory shows,that all children
were not meant to be educated
and that the schools enforce
capitalism to produce winners
and losers.
HE CALLED SCHOOLS
like these "at risk" if they im
plement tracking, have low ex
pectations, disproportionate
suspensions, a curriculum
"hich does not reflect the
student's heritage, uninvolved
parents, noncompliance in
equity, and emphasis on ath
letics.
Kunj ufu pointed out
misplaced priorities in this
country sends 436,000 Black,
males to college and 609,000 to
prison. He said the country is
willing to spend $18,000 to
$38,000 annually to incarcerate
a person but not spend $10,000
for them to attend college for
four years.
He also pointed out that 86
percent of the starters in the
National Basketball League
are Black but make up only two
percent of the country's doc
tors.
On that theme, Kunjufu said
that the fir t doctor in the
world was Imhotep of ancient
Km e t (Egypt). He said
teachers must let their stu
dents know about their history, .
saying when he talks of a mul
ticultural curriculum, He is not
advocating going from one ex
treme to the other, but simply
interested in telling the truth.
Kunjufu, a member of Self
Esteem Through Culture
Leads to Academic Excellence
(SETCLAE), advocated the
use of Black male classrooms,
Black male role model
programs, more Black male
teachers, initiating a Rites of
Passage program, a Malcolm X
and Dr. Martin Luther King
program, and a mandatory in
service to teach teachers how
to. educate Black males.
He said by the year 2000, 70
percent of Black men will be
unavailable to Black women
and that the problem has to be
addressed before it starts,
around the fourth grade.
