Twenty-two percent of
the nation' 28.2 million
Afric n-American over
the age of two reported
th t they used a computer
in 1989, ccording to ur­
vey recently released by
the U.S. Commerce
Oep rtment' Censu
Bureau.
That' compared to 34
percent for white over
• two year old.
Of the 6.3 million Black
computer users, 42 percent
were aged 3 to 17 and 58
percent were 18 and over.
The comparable figures
for whites were 31 percent
and 69 percent. Eleven
· percent of Black children
· and 27 percent of white
· children had computers in
their homes. About 65 per­
t cent of Black chi\dre nand
72 percent of white
· children said that they
· used them.

The pledge ,along with

totaling $36 million, were

Annenberg' $50 million
challenge grant. Fund
will be directed to areas of
scholarshi ps, general en­
dowment, program and
faculty development, and
construction and renova­
tion of facil i ties and ad­
mini tration. These areas
are identified by UNCF
college pre ident as high­
priori ty need .

diagrams." She added, "I've
al 0 had orne training in er­
vice work."

"The city of Detroit need
people to hop here; I try to
spend all my money in the city
of Detroit," he aid. "I don't
neccs arily shop pennie be­
cause there are other factor
involved."
Hanna also feels that
people have gotten out of the
habit of shopping in th
neighborhood and they go to
shopping malls .because they
hink they are going to get
be tte r deals.
"I don't think it's true," she
said. "I think the merchant
here on the Avenue (Liver­
nois) have very good price
and dollar for dollar they (the
'hopper ) arc ge ui ng more."
