The war. at home
By Rev. AI iharpton
We are now being told that
the American military involve
ment in the Persian Gulf is com
pleted, that Saddam Hussein,
despite his boa is , has sur
rendered, that the POW' and
the MIA's are being returned
and' that the United States has
s co ren a military victory in
record time over a "third world"
nation.
Therefore, without getting
into the meri ts or demeri ts of
the war (any frequent reader of
the Peoples' Preacher knows.my
po ition again t American im
pe r iali m, America' control of
the Arab world and protection
of its oil interests-the real
reason for this latest battle).
Let's deal with the fact that now
America should turn its atten
tion toward the problems at
home and declare war there.
Any time a nation which .
the biggest debtor nation in the
world can come up witha bil ..

lion dollars a day for war, one
must question why that nation
cannot come up with the money
to improve education and health
facilities. to fight homeless
ness, AIDS. racial violence and
any number of critical social is
sues here that arc being cut by
state budgets while the military
budget has Skyrocketed into
never-never land.
To me it is not the time for
those who had begun building
the anti-war movement to drop
their placards, shave t' e i r
beards, cut their hair and go
back to school. It is time for
them to 'turn their igns around
and write new slogans.
