The following is a statement
[rom the mother of Tamika
Swanson, Earnestine Swanson.
To the Editor:
I'm aski ng for all residents of
Berrien County nd throughout
the State of Michigan to JOin
with me in signing thi state
ment in trying to help tamp out
the drugs and crime in our area.
That will not allow our young
people or senior ci tizens to go to
the store without the fear of
being raped or hot.- The way
my baby Tamika's life was
taken from her on December 10,
1990. While Tamika and friends
were returning home from a bas
ketball gam .
That horrifying day will be
with me for the rest of my life.
We must not allow people like
those dangerous people to take
children's rives to continue who
walk the treets in gangs, deal
ing drugs: killing innocent
people.
I have been suffering ever
since December 10, 1990. It
could be your child today or
even tomorrow or your mother
or father or a frie nd.
Gangs, drugs, guns and crime
must be removed from our city
streets.
I am sending copies of this
statement to the City Manager
of Benton Harbor, the state At
torney General and Repre-
.se nta ti ve of the Governor of
Michigan.
It is too late to ave my baby,
Tamika's life, but I have three
more that I have to protect. Will
YO'u please help me to help save
other chilure . I pray to God
that the judge. makes the right
deci ion, and gives those guys
the maximum sentence for the
life that they took.
We the undersigned appeal to
judges to sentences those who
would i ndiscri mi na tel y kill or
maim others to the maximum
penalty allowed by law.
We feel only this way that the
individuals will be responsible
and accountable for their ac
tions.

"I'm thinking bout her

"I can not it here and tell you
that there will not be any

know how to handle those
problems."
Commis loner Steve Wooden
aid he has been talking to ome
of the youths that hang around on
the corner of Broadway and Em
pire and they tell him that hang
around there becau e they don't
have any place else to go.
"I think we should give M .
Brown a chance, not by our vote,
but support her in every way we
can," said Wooden.
Commissioners Fred Sims and
Charles Yarbrough said they
were concerned about the resi
dents in the neighborhood also.
"This is not an easy issue,"
said Yarbrough. "We all hould
search our souls and ask oursel
ves one basic que tion, 'would
we want it next to us.?' I would
y no, I. don't waD .
me."
"It's a har decision to me, but
I'm willing to ask the folks in the
neighborhood to trust us, because
if there is a problem, I would be
one of the first to stop it (Cen
ter)," said Yarbrough ..
"There's no guarantees here,
so let's start to cooperate for
once. If there is a problem call
the police," he told the residents.
Commissioners Kerry Shan
non, Steve Wooden, and Ralph
Crenshaw all told Ms. Brown that
they would be willing to stop in
at the center and give their sup
port.
Brown said she would be the
first herself to close the center
down if it didn't work.
