On December 7, 1941, Dorie Miller a Black
messma , lea to the anti -aircraft gun of a fallen
comrade and proceeded to hoot down two to five
Japanese fighter plane while under heavy enemy fire.
It was a truly amazing feat. E pecially in light of
the fact that he had never fired an anti-aircraft gun in
hi life becau e the Navy did not give Bla ervic en
weapons training. .
For i . courage and gallantry he hould have been
awarded the avy Cro without que tion. But certain
powers felt America wa n't ready for a Black hero 0 they
downplayed hi deed. That' when the real battle began.
Civil rights group , Black new papers and even
white liberals joined forces. They began fighting for
Miller to receive the recognition he rightfully deserved.
o
Finally the Pre ident of the United States intervened on
Miller's behalf. And in ay of 1942, Seaman Third
Cia s Dorie Miller became the first African - American
to receive the avy's highe t medal, the Navy Cross.
In honor of Black Hi tory Month, the Chrysler
Corporation salutes Dorie Miller. His heroism did more
than just earn him a medal. It opened the door which led
to America' armed force becoming truly representative
of all its people. In the proce s they became the most
powerful force for freedom in the world today.
