According to th Handbook cf Nonprescription Drugs, the concentra
tion of a particular medicine in brea t milk d pen o many factor ,-,the
concenttation in the mother' blood and characten tiC of th medlcme,
such as its fat solubility and the degree to whic it i bound to blood plasma
protein and milk protein. Another factor is the time of breast-feeding. If
the medicine must be taken routinely, it hould be taken hortly after
breast-feeding. Thi allows as much time po ible for the medicine to
clear the mother' blood and allow for a lower concentration at the time
of the next feeding.
The Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs also indicate that aspirin
and other salicylates houd be used with cautin by nsing mothers.
Certain prescription drugs Ideally hould be aVOlded dllflIlg breast-
ing. There are always exception, however, based on rh health condluon
