he piri of t the oppisite things about the same subject?" R.C 9m.rpondent Our children, forced into living on the surfact of their live throughout most of the year, take advantage of in dulgent holiday spirits by battering us with all the questions that we didn't have time for as we strug gled to make material Christmas wishes come true. "How come seven million kids vanished from the 1987 U.S: Income Tax returns of working parents and yet nobody reported them miss ing?" "Why does the govern ment refu e to sanction sports and recreation equip ment that's responsible for the majority of deaths and injuries to playing children, yet it recalls, if not outlaws, a few toys it considers un safe?" "What purpose does it serve for Blacks to join the armed forces and defend the American Way when they are denied the oppor tun 'ty of participating in it, the American Way, that is?" "How is it possible for Democrats and Republicans to both be speaking the truth when they're saying AT THIS POINT e real ize why children should be seen and not heard. If we take the easy way out - tell 'em we don't have answers to their questions - we'll probably lose what little remaining influence we have in their lives. We certainly won't be the shining ex ample of knowledge and wisdom that we had hoped to be in their innocent eyes. Recalling that some baby doctor once said that parents should tell their children only as much of the truth as the children can digest, we get a serious look in our eyes and prepare to spill our guts. Why not? God' nows they indulge us by pretending to believe in Santa Claus and other such fantasies. Republicans, like Democrats, we hesitantly begin with a uneasy feeling of being on stage, are con sumed by the same conflict ing passions. These passions prompt them to lead citizens while, at the same time seek to offer citizens the greatest amount of freed m. The end result is a con- Wee of De e ber , 1 e Holiday fusing collection of con tradictory la I, programs, and policies that combine to enslave the American people. This unfortunate situation incited some tax- o payers to claim dependants that they didn't have but in '87 they had to produce so cial security numbers for these kids. So there are DO missing kids that concerned parents aren't 0 dilligently looking for. "SO THERE'S no dif ference between Democrats and Republican's?" Yes, there is. it s one of focus. Democr ts usually include more citizens in their focus on democracy, Republicans see only a limited number of people as being eligible for freedom, justice, and equality. "According to T.V. news, a growing precentage of Black voters selected Republican candidates in the recent elections. Why is that?" Before responding, we fight the urge to raise our eyebrow in a questioning manner. With all the, choices in television viewing (Black Entertainment Television, MTV, and a bevy of cartoon MICHIGA CITIZEN Page 7 Revealed characters), why did our child choo e newscast? Perhaps e should be more selecti e in hat we permit our offspring to watch on T.V , race across our mindes s we picture ourselves as ruth-conceal ing badguys n a combined 60 Minutes, eet the Press, and Face the ation. Hiding ou discomfort, we calmly tate for the record: Unwilling to embrace ex isting alternative to the major parties or to ere te new ones, some Blacks et tied for the GOP, hoping to punish Democrats to taking Black votes for granted. However, Bush's veto of the 1990 Civil Rights Act proves that the Republican Party will give us no respect, Continued on Pag 4 ayor cott elec ed to National Board of Directors HIGHLAND PARK -t the recent meeting of the arion al League of Citie (NLC), December 1-5, in Houston, Texa • Mayor Martha Scott wa elected director-at-large of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Of icials (NBC/LEO). · NBC/LEO °i a divi ion of the NLC comprised 0 local elected officiais from the nation' citles..
