Ronald Re gan rode into
office on pledge to cut
taxes; reduce the burden of
government by cutting
federal programs; rebbuild
America's military power by
increa ing defense pending;
and chieve a balanced
budget. From the beginning
this bizzare set of proposals
wa formula for failure.
During the 1980
Republican primaries,
George Bu h characterized
Reagonomic as "voodoo
economics" .
Reagan rode out of office
to the afcty of the unset
leaving minorities, the poor
and -working people reeling
from the impact of an ad
ministration which hredded
the fragile afety network of
oci I ervice programs.
The rich got richer under
Re gan, 'but the poor were
made 10 uffer.
TAXES WERE indeed
reduced, but the' greate t
reductions were for the rich.
Meanwhile Reagan pushed

By the end of the 80's, 1/2
of 1 % of the people in the
United States controlled
nearly 30% of the wealth.
_ The top 10% controlled
nearly70% of the wealth. But
the bottom 80% controlled
only about 30% of the

Unbelieveable fortune
ere accumulated. aided and
abeued a "reformed" t x
code which actually reduced
taxes for the wealthy while
increasing taxes on poor and
.middle income famili s.
According to an analysis
of Congre sional Budget of
fice data done by citizens for
Tax Justice. "The richest 1
percent of the population will
pay 36% les (in taxes) thi
year" than under the 1977 tax
code. However, poor families
will pay as high as 14% more
and middle income families
7% more.

bill for Reagonomics and ,..... ....
Reaganism has come due.
Voodoo economics did not
work.
When Reagan took office
the federal defici was $79
billion. Currently the deficit
stands at nearly $300 billion.
Adding to this calamity is
the fall-out of the staggering
rip-off in the SaL industry
which will cost the American
people $1 trillion over the
next 30 year' wi th interest.
The $8-10 hillion H.O.D.
rip-off almost seems m ager
in cornparis on.
Again the outcome i for
tunes for the few and mi for
tune for the many. It is oor
and working people n the
middle class that will s ffer
most because of these can
dais.
Huge chunk of reso rces
that could have been ail
able for social programs will
now be diverted to pay for the
SaL bail out. And it will be
the tax dollars of the little
people that will pay for a
catastrophe which they did
not create.
