"Wild At Heart"
Wild at He ,winner t thi year's Canne Film Festival. is
both sensual nd captlv ting. Thi. film is reminiscent of "Blue
Velvet", and if you d n't know ju t what that means. it's the
kind of movi that you have to be a little. it: to enjoy.
Ironically en ugh, the 11m got's "The Wizard of Oz'' written all
over it." On y this time, Dorothy goes hy the nam of "Lui
ace . nun : t 'bad itch is lY, widowed mother' the
Emerald City is a dry, dusty town in 'c: as: and the yellow brick
rot d i. spla tcrcd with blond. I guess nothing is sacred
anymore. An while director David yn h (who is n re nown
for "Twin Pe ks") de ribes the film a. a violent comedy.tlead
actor Nichol s Cage admits "the Wizard of Oz i there
omewhere. "
"Wild at Hea "stars Cage (as Sailor Ripley) oppo ite Laura
Dern s Lula ace Fonune. After Lynch read the novel "Wild at
Heart, the St ry of Lula and Sailor", he knew that he wanted
Cage and De to play the wild and pa .. ionate lovers. Lynch's
detennin tion to get Dern for the role of "Lula", wa. matched
only by his d ire for Dern's real-life mother, Diane Ladd, a
the ob e ed nd crazed Marieua.v-Lula's mother. (It w the
first time Der and her mother had worked together ince Laura
was a child). illiam Dafoe was another obvious choice for the
film's bl: ck a gel, So by Peru. Alo included in the cast is
Calvin Lockh, (remember him") as : den nted killer who plays
one of.the bad guy . But if you blin r go to get popcorn at the
wrong time, y just might miss him.
Thi psychotic love tory .. tarts with Sailor and Lula trying des
perately to st y together, as Ladd (excellent in the role of
Marietta) i. 0 e ed with the idea Of keeping them apan. So
much so, that he enlists the aid of h r boyfriend (Harry Dean
Stanton) and obster ex-lover (lE. Freeman) to help her. The
film opens wi Marietta putting a contract out on Cage, and the
race is on. A ng the w' y, we meet some shady ch rac-ters,
though the sh ie t of them are conjured up in Lola's own mind.
(In one. eque ce, M rietta dons a broom, and appear. very
much like the IC cd witch of the cnxt). In another, Lula clicks
her heels three imes in an attempt to g ,t I me.
