Pat Younge. a reporter for a Black London newspaper, said "Black" IS a political term used to UOI fy people of vary­ ing ethnic cultures. "The term Black stops at­ tempts to pit people of dif­ ferent ethnic backgrounds gainst one another." he said. The common experiences of racism, discrimination, op­ pression and injustice are used as the basis for the term, not merely skin color. Claire Hynes, a senior reporter for a Black newspaper, said ethnic minorities have a common disadva nraged and unde r­ privileged status in all society that is dominated by Whites. Hynes said discrimination in Great Britain is similar in some ways to drscnrnination in the United Stales. She said discrirni nation is becomi ng more subtle-i-va more hidden form." For example, the Black Sec­ tions of the Labour Party, area Community Relations Coun­ cils and the Commission for Racial Equality have resulted from the collective political power for the Black com­ munity. YOUNGE SAID race rela­ tion legislation was also brought about by communi ty pressure. "It was an example of Black people coming together for a common cause," he said. Younge said the political powerbase elected four Black members to Parliament. Three are Afro-Caribbean and one is Indian. .
