Gilliam (played by Denzel
Washington), an immensely

centered jazz trumpeter, who
is forced to open hi eyes and
heart to the orld around him.
Washington most recently
brought his pa sion and
onscreen intelligence to
director Ed rd Z ick's
"Glory," the epic about the
fighting 54th, the first Black
unit to fight in the Civil War,
a role which won him the
Academy Award for Best Sup­
porting Actor. It was his first
o car and his econd nomina-
tion in the category. His first
nomination was in 1988 for
his performance as -the slain
South African activist Steven
Biko in Sir Richard
Attenborough's "Cry
Freedom." W shington ha
