bombing of Hiroshima and

mitment to building a future

HEMID (Help Elderly
Maintain Independence nd
Dignity) is a non-pr fit
corporation founded to
provide services for pe ple
over 60 living within the
North Central Area of Det it.
It began in October of
1973, wben a survey of pa ish
boundaries conducted by St.
Rita's church revealed �bat
over 30Cl, of the parisbio ers
were over go years of ge,
many living alone, and all
trying 0 to maintain
indepenaent living.
A group of concerned
community citizen founded
HEMID to help meet the
need of these seniors.
HEMID is now funded for
in-home service which
include homemaking and
chore services. This includes
light housekeeping, shopping
a sistance, minor home
repairs, snow hoveling, and
yard work, installation of
safety items and occasional
transportation to doctors

volunteers also do some
visiting and telephoning.
They are a meal -at-home
deli very si te, leg I aid
chedule days at their office
periodically, Social Security
al 0 come to sist people at
the HEMID site. Over the
years they have developed a
y tem of coordin tion of
services with other agencies
to help seniors ith problem
beyond the cope of their
services. Mrs. Narring i
Director of HEMID, he is
also a senior and stiU ju t a
am itious and strong willed
she was when she first beg n.
Vee Web ter is a friend and
co-worker of Mr . Narring
and h s been by her side for
many years. Together long
with other determined
individuals they became a
po iti ve force. HEMID is j t
another example of how
community organizations are
making the difference.
