To co the rising costs of
g e collection, the city is
c:oosidcriDglevyiDg ,
and cbaDgcd requiremen
for dumping of yearly clean-up
items.
At its quiar weekly meet
dig, M y, May 14, the Ben
to Harbor City Commi . on
gave Uty Steve Man
ning approval by ccosensus to
dis . n designatiug dump-
ing sites for the city- ide clean
up and instead, have city
reside take their trash/rub
bish to the city' public works.
UDder the new arrangement,
residents must pay a ft1C for
dumping.
Manning . d the city pent
approximately $200,000 for the
city-wide cleanup two years
ago, because people from ou
side the city limits were coming
in 0 the city limits of Benton
Harbor and dumping their trash
on diffe t streets.
anning said this year the
city tried to control the dumping
problem by not putting it into
the newspapers, but somehow it
got out. He s . d staff people
have gone out on routine patrols
o the vacant lots where dump
ing sites are located and almost
gotten into fist fight with
people who don't live in the city
dumping their trash at city sites.
Now, city residents must
take their trash and debris to the

there for a fee of $10.
For senior citizens, Manning
said there will be a home pickup
free of charge.
For all residents who want
their trash pic ed up, a fee of
$20 would be charged. Call the
public works department 927-
8442 for pick-up.
Manning said anyone that is
caught dumJing illal1y will be
punished. He urged residents
and block clubs to mooitor the
illegal dumping by eeping an
eye out for them, with radios, in
such ay that they woo't get
hurt. "All I need is a license
plate number and an address."
Commissioner Ralph Cren
shaw said that some residents
have already dumped their trash
free of charge, while others who
get started on cleanup late will
have to pay for dumping.
"We have to be consistant",
Crenshaw said, "Whatever we
do for one group we'll have to
do for the others. "
The commission then voted
to tpone any action on a
resolution to increase the price
of the City's imprinted orange
trash bags and mandating the
purchase of imprinted yellow
trash bags for leaves, grass clip
pings, shrubbery or small limbs.
The proposed cost hike
would control the overall ex
pease for trash removal, said
Manning.

Manning said the. city .now
pays Acme $24,000 a month to .
collect ttash/garbage in the city
and he sees an· increase if the
residents continue to add lawn
debris to the collection.
. Commissioner . George
Wysinger and Steve ·Wooden
said they have had calls and
complaints from city residents
about the increase in the cost of
trash bags. Citizens are very -
upset, stating that they would
not buy the bags when they
could purchase trash bags in the
store for less.
Collllllissioner Ralph Cren-
haw aid there are complaints
because residents might not un
derstand what they are talking
about. He said the cost of
landfill aDd the cost of picking
up trash is twice as much as what
they are paying.
Wysingcr told Manning that
"peple don't like you dictating
to them" on what kind of trash
bag they should use.
"I tbink it is a cheap price to
pay." said Crenshaw.
