Funded by the ional Endowment for the gmanities and scheduled for publication next year, this book deals with American children's experiences on the homefront during the Second World War. The child's perspective sel dom appears in history. This is especially true for African American children.' Yet for many African-Americans now in their fifties, their childhood experiences during the war were not only of crucial impor tance then, but have remained influential throughout their lives. I want to write about African-American girls and boys. This was a time when sol dier fathers were absent from the family and when mothers went to ork in factories. It was a time, sadly, of race riots, such as in Detroit and Los Angeles in 1943. y book wiJl explore race relations among children, and it will deal with African American children's contribu tions to the war effort in scrap-collection and bond drives. The boo , finally, will ex amine the wartime hopes and fears of African-American children, some of which people from this generation have ,car ried with them into the 1990s.
