A Los Angeles Superior
Court judge dismissed a $10
, million lawsuit filed against Ar
senio Hall by Willis Edwards
former NAACP official.
Willis' lawyer Geraldine
Green then filed a writ of man
date calling for an immediate
review of Judge Ernest George
Williams' decision.
"Obviously, we are upset,
especially since we believe we
are right on the law," Green
said. "The judge's opinion is just
wrong."
Hall's office refused to com
ment on the judge's decision."
'Williams dismissed the case
because he said Hall was exer
cising his freedom of speech
when he called Edward a ten
nis-shoe pimp" and "an extor
tionist."
Williams went a step fruther .
with his reasoning when he said
he was throwing out the case be
cause he was a fasttrack judge
.under legislative mandate to
clear up his case backlog.
"I'm going to bite the bullet
and let the court of appeal tell
me whether it's defamation,"
Williams said in his decision. "If
it is, we'll go to trial. But I don't
have 30 days now to have a trial
. when I've got 7(JJ cases waiting
to be tried. '
"If I'm wrong,ju come right
back down and you'll get your
d y in court."
The question boils down to
whether Hall was exercising his
freedon of speech without
malice, as his attorney Morton
Rosen contends or whether Ed
wards character was defamed.
"We believe in freedom of
speech too, but to accuse
(Edwards) of a crime or make
statements reflecting on a
person's honesty - that's
where we draw the line, Green
said. '

The controversy stems from
an alleged dona on Edwards,
former National Association

from Hall to the NAACP, Hall
said.
Still pending is a second $10

him a "phony Black tennis-shoe
(wearing) pimp" in a Nov. 2
1989 "Rolling Stone" magazine
