groups ban
pledging
81'. WUIS - In a historical
step, leaders of eight National
Black Greek-Letter organiza­
tions meeting here this weekend
at the Sheraton St. Louis have
agreed to unify their member­
ship intake process by eliminat­
ing pledging.
These organizations have
been supportive of each other's
programs and projects
throughout their history.
However, this is the first time
. they have convened at one-site
with their executive boards to
address the far-reaching im­
plications of membership in­
take.
Though the organizations
did not mention t, an
African American student at
Howard died earlier this year
following a hazing ritual linked
to pledging. _
Nationwide, the groups have
an aggregate of over 800,000
college trained membe .

The groups operate many
programs throughout the
United State, West Germany,
West Africa, Bahamas Islands
and Korea
According to Dr. Norman,
"the group takes pride in having
addressed several issues rela­
tive to the membership intake
process of the respective or­
ganizations" .
Additionally, he stated "it is
the consensu of the organiza­
tion as expre ed through the '
national presidents and execu­
tives b ard that there be some
modifications in this process
pending review and ratification
by each of us.
These modifications of the
membership intake proce s in­
clude the elimination of pledg­
ing in any form."
