they gathered during their own
probe of the slaying,
Farrakhan's attorney James
Montgomery said Oct. 16.
A grand jury in Harris Coun
ty convened after a Black Mus
lim imprisoned in Chicago on
federal bank robbery charges
told FB I investigators of
Farrakhan's probe into
Wattlington's death.
"The anti-terrorist unit of the
FBI energized the prosecutor's
office in Harris County, Texas
to reopen this investigation
based on allegations made by
this fellow," Montgomery said.
The jailed Muslim, identified
only as "Theron" by the lawyer,
was "interrogated by the anti
terrorist sectioon of the FBI
with a view toward getting some
sort of information that might
implicate Louis Farrakhan in
something criminal,"
Montgomery said.
FBI officials in Chicago and
Houston declined to discuss the
case, saying policy dictates they
not talk about grand jury inves
tigations.
"Theron" told the FBI Far
rakhan sent the two other mini
sters to Houston to investigate
the Wattlington laying. said
Montgomery.
The FBI then served sub
poenas on Farrakhan in,
Chic go, on mini ter J abril
Muhammad in Phoenix and on
minister Khalid Muhammad -
no relation - in Atl nta,
Montgomery said.
Attorneys for the Nation of
Islam appeared before Texas
District Judge Mary Bacon last
month in an attempt to quash
the subpoenas. She refused but
only ordered the two ministers
to appear.
Telephone calls by the AP
reporters to the homes of J abril
Muhammad and Khalid
Muhammad went unanswered
on Oct. 16.
Prosecutor Terry Wilson
said an offer of immunity would
compel the ministers to release
any information they have about
the case, because each could be
held in contempt of the grand
jury investigating the murder if
he did not comply.
Wil on said the offer would
be considered because there
was no specific belief they (the
ministers) did anything wrong.
We're trying to see if the tape
exists."
Montgomerydeclined to say
whether any such recordng ex
ixts, but said the subpoenas
were fraudulently obtained and .
were mere subterfuge (by the
FBI) to attempt to entrap Far
rakhan and the ministers in
criminality. "
"We vie ed it as a subterfuge
of a greater goal of the FBI that
is to jail Farrakhan and destroy
Islam," he said.
Farakhan is the leader of the
Chicago-b ed ation of Islam.
