pioneer in the fight against drug abuse, and
ew Yor city act res who has helped
hundreds of disadvantaged high school stu­
dents gain a greater sense of self- orth are
among the 1989 Kool Achievers. .
The Awards recognize individuals who are
improving the quality dflife in America's inner
cities. The five 1989 recipient and their
catagory of ccomplishment are: Ronald C.
Clark of Washington, D.C., civic; Sabra Jones,
ew York City, arts; Christopher H. Bennett of
Seattle, communications; Dr. Inez Kaiser of
Kansas City, Mo., Business; and Dr. Jawanza
Kunjufu of Chicago, Education,
Each recipient will receive $10,000 to be
contributed to the inner city, non-profit or­
ganization of their choice. The awards come
from sponsor Louisville-based Brown & Wil­
liamson Tobacco Corporation. The awards
ha e been pre ented annually since 1986.
This year's Kool Achievers were selected
from more than 530 nominations from 30 st tes.
Earlier this year, nomiaees were narrowed to a
. group of 47 finalists who each received $1,000
to donate to the inner-city organization of their
choice.
