HIGHLAND PARK FOCUS
Michigan Educational Assess
ment Program (MEAP) read
ing tests, given every year in all
three gr des . ce 1973, h ve
been changed.
Instead of testing isolated
reading skills, the new test
mea ures howell a student
understands what he or he has
re d.
The old MEAP reading tests
contained lists of questions and
occasional short (two-or-three
paragraph) reading selections.
The new tests have two long
read' selections --- a story and
an informational selection like
that found in a social tudies or
ci nee textbook,
An even bigger difference,
state and local officials point
out, is th t the new MEAP read
ing test scores cannot be com
pared to last year's test results,
because new higher st ndard
is being used to measure h w
well students are doing.
But curriculum Ie ders in
Highland Park nd around the
state will be in better position
to help classroom teachers
determine individual student
reading abilities and needs, with
the new tests providing much
valuable information for
teachers.
MEAP officials in La ing

tests follow fiv years of re
