Congressman John Conyers
held a press conference at
Westin Hotel on Tuesday
August 1, to kick-offhis election
campaign. Introduced by S
Represent rive Nelson R.
Saunders, Conyers in his
dres to the medi initial
sought to explain . rcaso for
entering the mayoral race at this
time.
-. have been member of
I Congress for the past 2S years,
and many Detroiters are .
by I would want to run for
mayor. Why would I step d
from the Congress and my posi-
. on chairman of the House
Government Operations Co -
mittee, which oversees the Sl.1
trillion federal operation?"
"I don't see this as a step
down," Conyers continued," but
as an opportunity to provide d
fectiv leadership in overcom
ing the challenges that confront
Detroit and it's ci izens. -lf
something isn't done now about
the steady deterioration of this
cit y th re won't be a Congr -
sional district left to represent,"
the Congressman said.
According to Conyers the
city is in n ed of a liberatory
force for those ho have been
"intimidated, censored or fired"
because they disagreed with the
administration.
Conyer . d that "our cam-
paign will be conducted just

operate, it will be- open' and
vo
ls millions
. designed to revitalize the all im
portant h spirit of Detroit.
It will be a people's campaign
with inpu &om all segments of #
our community, especially
those who have found the door
of city hall closed d whose
complaints ve faUen on the
deaf ears. of th 0 do not
toler e dissent of y kind."
In this campaign platform
Conyers called for. the enact
meat of a meaningful handgun
control ordinance; a rectifica
tion of the Chrysler land deal
where the city ·wrongfully paid
$42 million in the deal , a reduc- _
tion in mayoral appointee ;
funding of neighborhood
development program ; to
reduce the Yersarial relation
ship between the mayor' office
and city co cil; a moratorium
on all bonding; and the end to
union bu ing t ctics; among
other issues.
Despite the initial excite
ment over the entry of Conyers
into the race and the result of
the Free Press poU, Coleman
Young still remains th front
runner with a S5.5 million cam
paignfund.
Young's image as being ir
replacable is being projected
more forcefully than ever
fore in his election campaign
propaganda.
Unless both Conyers and
Henderson can put.together the
necessary organization at the
neighborhood level, they will
not be able to effectiv Iy com
plete with Young's political
machine.
What happens' in the next
few weeks is this regard will be
far more jmportant tban what
happened so far. .
