Demand dec ht h using'
Co tinued from 1
tenants with respect.
Five minutes of marching,
and the 50 protestors had suc-
ceeded. Out of the Amurcon of
fices came the company's Chair
man and Chief Executive of
ficer, Barton Berman.
Berman claimed to know
nothing of the tenants com
plaints although Williams said
the tenants had tried repeatedly
without success to reach Ber
man.
Berman addressed the
protestdrs, speaking on their
behalf and ·placing the blame on
Amurcon employees.
He said he will not see the
tenants of his buildings being
taken advantage of by anyone.
Berman, whose company
represents over O,()()() rental
units nationwide, said he
believed the issues presented by
the protesters were real and that
he possessed the bility to selve
every ODe of them. which be in-
tended to do.
Berman told th protesters
that the employees who failed to
hear their complaints would be
turned over to personnel and
evaluated.
"The tenants haven't dealt
with me previously and it will be
fun for me to come out of semi
retirement and do what has to
be done, Berman said.
Williams said Berman had
not re ponded previously and
he refused to believe Berman
until action w taken.
Williams said HCCG is nly
asking Amurcon to live up to itS
management contract.
UCHC Tenant Organizer :
Alma Hawkins said Berman
asked for a prtivale - no press
present - meeting with the
tenants ana HCCG and UCHC.
She said getting Berman to
make a personal appearance at.
the picket was a victory for the
housing groups.
