. e poorest campaign, the
richest message, the broadest
reach," is how Presidential can
didate Jesse Jackson explained
his sweep of the South on Super
Tuesday, the 2O-state primary.
e, the people can win!"
Jackson earned first place in
four states, second in the rest
and out polled ,every other can
didate when all the votes from
all the states were tallied, Jack

In a speech to his campaign
workers in Houston Tue day
night, J ack on listed the amount
of money spent by his opponents
in the Super Tuesday contest:
Massachusetts Gov. Mike
Dukakis, S 4 million; Tennessee
Sen. Al Gore, $2 million; Mis
souri Rep, Dick Gephardt, $1
million; Jesse Jackson, $100,000.
Jackson reminded his lis
teners that 23 years ago this
eek, Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. and the civil rights fighters
were trying to march, from
Selma, Alabama to that state's
capitol, 'Montgomery in an ef
fort to win the right the right to
vote.
"They didn't have an adver
tising budget, It Jackson told the
cheering crowd. "they marched
because they wanted to serve.
They marched because they
knew they were right."
Jackson said that now 23
years later, "because our cause is
right, we have won,"
Jackson has stressed com
mon sense U.S. policies during
his campaign. He has stressed
the themes: reinvest in
America, stop the dope,
conomic justice. .
Black voters in the South \
went for Jackson at a rate of
93% according to ABC
television exit polls, compared
to a 71% backing in 1984.
J ackson continues to gather
white support. He I explained
during an NBC interview,
"When voters are allowed access
to our message, barriers fail,"
The campaign now focuses
on Illinoi in preparatidn for the
March 15 primary there, then
will switch to Michigan for the
March 26 caucuses.
J ackson was the only
presidential candidate to gath ..
'the required number of signa
tures -13,000 - to place his name
on' the Deatic caucus bal
lots in Michigan. The other can
didates paid the $3,500 fee to be
