"0 nior • for example,
have no idea thi bill provides
absolutely no protection again
the cost of long-term care,"
he said. 'Considering the fact
that 80 p rcent of catastro
phic care ex pen are long
term care cost, it is absurd
to call the Hou measure
'catastrophic care' bill."
The national media ha,
"failed to 100 beyond the
press relea s" in ignoring th
fact that senior, "would face
substantially increased premiums
for marginally improved cover
age that does not address their
central health care needs",
Roo velt said. 'Most niors
don't understand what has hap
pened in the House becau
the media has been satisfied
to report glowing accounts made
by the very people who crafted
this legislation."
Roosevelt criticized the
Hou for loading the full
financing of the few coverage
improvement offered, onto the
elderly. "We wouldn't a
only veteran to play for VA
hospitals or only parents to
pay for schools but the Hou
has passed a bill which will
put the entire co of new
health coverage on seniors al
ready burdened with tremen
dous health care cost "
The ational Committee ha
recently mailed more than
million "Legislative Alerts" to
its most active members, Roose
velt said. "We're ing them
to flood the Senate with the
me ge that nior are not
satisfied with wh t the Hou
h accomplished and that we
want an improved legislative
p ckage."
The Hou bill is not withou
it good points, Roo viet said.
It would cap Medicare approved
hospital and physician costs at
1,798 annually. Eighty per
cent of the co of pre ription
drug will be covered at a
500 annual deductible is met
and spou of nursing home
patient will have limited· pro
tection of both income and
at.

The most powerful antidote to crime ever
known to the Black community was a simple mes
sage: IIWhat one sows one also reaps."
That message said to us if children were to be
inspired by the ideal of being their brothers
keepers, they would receive that inspiration from
adults who subscribed to the same value, not only
in word, but by deed as well.
That message gave assurance that the pursuit
of excellence was not in vain. It also gave mean-
,
ing to the frustrations, trials and sacrifices we
made for each generation to succeed the other.
That message implied that love, unity, respect
and courtesy are the fundamentals of a prog-res
sive community and that cooperation connects
the minds' of people, and that any community
which ignores this important item on the agenda
must suffer sooner or later accordingly. It said
progress is not 'automatic, but come I only
through deliberate effort and deep committment.
