DETROIT - Friday 13, was
an evening to remember at the
Monic Temple where the
dynamic singer and native
Detroiter, Anita Baker
crooned the tunes from her
latest release, 'Rapture', in
her laidb ck, combination Bil
lie Holid y/Nina Simone tyle.
A tunning white sequined
floor length gown brought out
the best in B er.
Alth ugh in her late 20's,
B er captured the style
of a era. The unique
thro ty ua1ity Baker utilizes
is j 1940' sound
needed to fill the house to
capacity, ppeals to all
es.
B er got her tart singing
in the Hartford Memorial Bap
tist Church choir. The ex
posure led to bigger and big
ger engagements, right up to
the present road tour.
. A host of relatives and
friends joined Baker back
e where she was presented
n conce
with an award for Outstanding
Entertainer of the Year, and
posed for a few pictures for
the waiting press.
Anita possesses an earthy,
good-natured personality and
portrays this in her performan
ces.
Baker says she enjoys the
down-to-earth type songs, this
being the criteria with which
she chooses the songs she will
or will not sing.

Coping
Step to developing self-confidence
By Dr. Chari W. F ullmer
We have previously talked
about proceures for manipulat
ing the way others perceive of
you, how to be a good sales
"actor," and how to develop
confidence. Here are some
tips:
1) Anticipate some amount
of tension during your contact
with customers. It's normal.
Take a few deep breaths and
continue with your activities.
2) Very, very few people
take the time to analyze and
evaluate the things that you
say, so don't worry about them
hanging on your every word.
Most people simply ract to
your smile, your clothes, your
voice and your enthusiasm.
Use these rections to your ad
vantage.
3) Use your tape recorder
as a tool to reprogram your
self by recording the things
you would like to believe
about yourself. Listen to the
tape over and over again.
With your eyes closed, try to
visualize yourself succeeding.
4) Relax by standing com
pletely still, balancing your
body until it ceases to sway,
breathing deeply, and imagin
ing yourself sinking down
through the floor. This will
allow all of the stress to drain
out of your body. Remember
to close your eyes during this
exercise.
S) When meeting anyone,
100 them directly in the eye
and do not lose eye contact
during your conversation.

This will force them to con
centrate on what you are
saying.
6) When you feel arguing,
don't do it! Instead, gently and
indirectly, praise the other per
son for something they are
wearing, doing, or saying.
They will respect your ability
to cope with their inade
quacies.
7) In the midst of your con
versation gently, but incon
sspicously, toucn the other per
son. Quickly remove your
hand and continue with the
conversation. This touch will
comfort and relax the in
dividual, and make them like
you. .
8) Try to become as articu
late as possibble. People are
mesmerized by good voices.
