He now holds an administra­ tive p sition with the Frederick School istrict, in Frederick, Mar yl: n 1. The district has 24, ents. 1 taught Social Studies at pre Rivers Middle Sen 1 from 1971 until 1974, when he was appointed prin­ cipal at Barrows Elementary School. He served there until 19 2, when he was appointed Assistant Principal of the Three Rivers Middle School. In 1984 he was appointed Assistant Principal of Three Rivers High School and served until June 19. He was chair of the Three Rivers Planning Commissioon, a board member of Three Rivers Youth Service Organization, chair of the Trustee board and church building fund, and taught Sunday school, all at Bethel Baptist Church. He is married to Barbara, formerly Barbara James of Three Rivers. The Daniels have three childre, twins Patrie and Patricia, and Gerald Jones. Sam Daniel contributed much and was a great asset to our community. Retired worker becomes realtor Ervin C. Haithcock has lived in Three Rivers 46 years. He is retired from Peterson Spring Corp., where he was a tool and die maker for 30 years. Although he is retired from Peterson Spring, he is still work­ ing. He has been a realtor for the past 10 years. He worked for Titus Homes, and is currently employed at As­ sociated Services Real Estate. He is a former president of the UA W U53 Local for six years, a member of the t. Joseph County board of real­ tors a former member of the bargaining committee and was chief negotiaor for 18 years. He is a former vice president and member of the local AACP. He is a member of the Lock­ port Township Planning Board, and was elected Constable three times, and has woked on the local Community Chest. There are other African Americans that have worked in real estate, but Haithcock is cur­ rently the only Black realtor in this area. Haith oc has been married to Louise (Ellis) of Southern In­ diana for 40 years, and they have four sons, Roderic , Rodney, Ronald.and Robert, and two grandchildren. Haithcock enjoys working onold cars. He is currently retoring a 1955 Cadillac, and a 1956 Chrysler. He says in any endeavors, he believes that it is imporatant to know what you're getting in­ volved in, and to continue your education. Bethel Baptist marks 41 st . nniversary The Bethel Baptist Church of Three Rivers, observed its 41st anniversary on October 24. Guest was Rev. Theodis Hadley and Canaan Baptist of Elkhart. . Harold Hughes is keynote spea er for Kalamazoo Alcoholism Awareness KALAMAZOO the Honorable Harold Hughes, former United State Senator, will be the keynote speaker for Alcoholism Awareness Week 1987, ovember 8 through November 15. Hughes will speak Mon., Nov. 9, at8 p.m. at the Kalamzoo Hilton Inn. The week's events are sponsored by the Kalamazoo Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council and the National Council on Alcoholism. As a United States Senator Harold Hughes introduced the legislative initiative known as the "Hughes Act" which estab­ lished federal funding for al­ coholism treatment and preven­ tion and created the ational Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Hughes was also governor of Iowa from 1962 to 1968, and author of the boo � "The n from Ida Grove. In 1984, 10,000 people attended the freedom fest" in Iowa, which celebrated 30 years of his recovery from al­ coholism. Tom Lucking, Executive Director of Kalamazoo Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council, (KADAC), said, "Harold Hughes is one of the most in­ fluential people in the field of al­ coholism this century. Prior to the 'H ughes Act,' most Americans did not have access to alcoholism treatment. Since the legislation, there is a nation­ al network of publicly funded al­ cohol programs."
