James Van DerZee: The Pic
ture-Takin' Man by James
Hawkins (Dod 1979) is an .in-
piring story of an African
American who started out
taking pictures just because he
had a fascination for the
camera, which was still a very
experimental invention when
Van DerZee was a boy. It was
not his intention to make a
career of photography, but
simply to take the best pictues
he could possibly take and to
make people to 100 like they.

gatherings, church socials,
fraternal events, weddings and
graduations, all of which all
ended up being one of the
most brilliant .records of
African American life ever
recorded. Van DerZee did
not finish school, but his
ability with the camera, his
hard work, and his insistence
upon giving people the best
service which he could give
have earned for him honorary
degrees from the nation's top
universities and a place in his
tory as one of the nation's
greatest photographers.
Gordon Parks, the first
Blac photo-journalist ill the
world, used the camera to tell
the story of Black people's
struggle with oppression and
to call attention to the
problems of poverty all over
the world. An excellent biog
raphy of Parks for young
readers is Gordon Parks:
Black Photographer and Film
Maker by Terry Harnon (Gar
rard 1972) which gives a
detailed account of how Parks
became interested in photog
raphy and of the efforts he put
into learning how to tell a
story with photographs.
Teenagers and adult
readers will enjoy Parks'
autobiography: A Choice Of
Weapons (Harper Row 1966)
which is his own account off
the hardships he encountered
in growing up, how he almost
fell into crime, and how he
chose instead, to use the
camera as his weapon to fight
the evils of racism and poverty.
Since photography is an ac
tivity which youngsters and
adults can share with equal en
thusiasm, it makes an excel
lent subject for picture-taking
families to read about
together. The nice thing about
photography as a road to read
ing is that it leaves a wonder
ful trail of photographs which
can be enjoyed for years to
come.
