Highland Park Men's Forum
It is much easier to discuss
responsibility than to practice
it
The men of Highland Park
were very conscious of this
thought when we formed the
Men' Forum.
If we desired a better com
munty, then it was up to us to
make it so.
We were also conscious that
young Black children are turn
ing away from the pursuit of
excellence at an alarming rate,
instead they are being at
tracted to the fringe elements
of society as their role models.
In the Forum we felt an in
creasing awareness and a
sense of obligation to serve as
those models for young Blac
entrapped in the vicious cycle
of poverty and despair.
Young Blac males are drop
ping out of high school be
cause they feel excitement is
more valuable than achie -
ment Their peers convince
them that drinking, gambling,
drugs and making babies is
"where it's at"
The members of the Forum
are well aware that no in
dividual can lift himself by his
own boot straps. If one is to
succeed there must be people
to serve as examples and
provide inspiration.
One of the first questions
sceptics asked is where will
the resources come from to ac
complish your goals.
Most Black adults who grew
up in the 1950's and before,
know that money was never
the primary concern of Black
families. We were able to take
very little, no only survive, but
educate our oung and create
opportunities here none e -
