The Civil Rights ovement of the Sixtie gave both Bl cks
and whites th opportunity to do mething about the great
vi] of gre tion in America. It was a chance for tho who
elieved in the principle of Chri tianity to tand up and be
counted.
ill D. Campb 11, a white uthern mini er, took the
opportunity and be me very ctive in the Civil Rights ove
ment. He remini bout it in the book, Forty Acres And A
Goat eachtree Publisher 198 .
The first two ord in the .title of thi book immediately
call to mind an inju tice hich as nev r corrected and a
debt which a never paid to tho who were brought to
America as sl ves. Campbell realize that though he is not the
one ho inflicted the inju ice, he is the neverthele the
one ho received the forty acre. Hi mini try recognizes
the need to brin bout' reconciliation between tho ho
ere robbed of the leg cy nd tho who received it.
Thi is a tall order e cially if one live in the south
where cu tom tradition family and friend are all piled on
one side of the great racial divide. To move against tho
cu oms nd tr ditions to correct the inuusti often meant
moving gain t one's own p ople yet Campbell felt that hi
calling as a Christian demanded that he do so.
Campbell pack this herit ge of the white uthemer into
a literary knap c and wind hi w y through the
Rights ovement with companion named T J. E e a
c mp ite character of the uthern Black mini ter. s
Campbell and aves travel together from 't-ins and marches
to n ly de grated re au rant they mu onfront those
hard que ti n re arding hri tianity and r e. They learn
to no one another nd become clo friends even while
discovering th t there are deep- t cultural lines which their

not directed to ard the people who are in cQntrol, i.e, the
