hundreds of children under l l-year-old. Most of the deten­
tions have come since a state of emergency wa irnpo d on
much of the c untry in June of 1 styear. As a result of pre
restricti ns impo d by the government it is difficult to get
exact figure on the number of Black who have been de­
tained. However various human rights groups inside South
fric put the number at nearly 300 children under 15. But
anti-apartheid groups e rimate the number of children being
held at n arly 2,000. The detentions are aimed at putting
an end to Black prote t for rights in South Africa - a coun­
try which is 70% Black but ruled by a minority white popu­
population.
DRIVER BEING INVESTIGATED
Queens .Y. - The driver of the car that struck and killed
• a Black man as he was fleeing a racial attack in Queen, ew
Yor la December is reportedly under investigation. Origi­
nally the driver of the car, Dominick Blum, was said to have
been ju t driving by and was not part of the attack. But one
of the urvivor of the attack had accused police of covering
up the role of Blum in the incident. Last week the special
pro cutor id he is now inve igating allegation made against
Blum. Thus far 12 white youths have been indicted on charges
ranging from second-degree murder to rioting in the attack
hich left 23-year-old Michael Griffith dead.
GOODE TO SEEK RE-ELECTION
Philadelphia, Pa. - Phil delphia's first Black mayor, W.
il n Goode, last wee formally announced hi campaign
for re-election. There had been some speculation that Goode
might not k another term after he was heavily criticized
for allowing police to drop a bomb on the.row-hou home of
a radical Black back-to-nature group. The bombing left 11
pie dead, including five children, and 61 homes de royed.
Goode's Republican challenger will be former law-and-order '
mayor Frank Rizzo. Despite his problems over the OVE
bombing Goode is favored to win the Democratic primary
and defe t hi Republican challenger.
